2005 McNaughton Park Trail Ultra Runs - Pekin, IL - Saturday April 16th ...Copyright ©2005 Bill Thom

The 5th Annual McNaughton Park Trail Runs began Saturday April 16th. Race Director Andy Weinberg (local resident of Pekin, IL) set the runners off at 6:00 a.m. A bagpiper adorned in Scottish kilt confused the park wildlife while inspiring the runners at the beginning of their journey.

Race distances of 10, 30, 50, and 100 miles were run on a 10-mile loop course. The course was a well-marked mix of single-track forest trails, grassy meadows, and perimeters of farm fields. Each loop featured four aid stations, steep hills (one with a rope-pull strung up trees), and multiple stream crossings - the deepest was just over ankle. The severity of the hills had some first timers wondering if we were, in fact, in Illinois.

Registered runners were treated to stylish PEARL iZUMi shirts, unique finisher - age group and overall awards, and eager volunteers working well stocked aid stations.

195 participants took part in the races, which concluded when the course officially closed at 6:00 p.m. Sunday giving the courageous 100 milers 36 hours to finish their mission.

Unofficial results will be posted here as soon as I find them.
